Thus recharged, but still tending his violated knee, Miller sought to defend his sanity to himself when contemplating the reality of the position in which he now was. Folan had once again skilfully manoeuvred him into place as his deniable source not only of intelligence on certain of Galway’s criminal elements, but also his means of exacting retribution on them. If anyone was going to find himself popping up daisies soon it was likely to be him. He had no choice now except to renew his acquaintance with Lukas and the Colombians. He also needed to get Emilija off his case by letting her know that it was Dovydas rather than he who had been the traitor. And that should prove to be a pleasant little conversation.

Miller hadn’t forgotten that Emilija wanted Lukas dead, and that she had lined Miller up to carry out that particular task. Revealing that Dovydas had sold his associates out, only because Folan had threatened her and their children with deportation, might repair the esteem in which she held her husband, but it would also bring her ire down on Folan’s head, which would be a prospect to behold. This new information, he thought, might also mean she’d change her mind about wanting Lukas dead and, by extension, relieve him of the imperative to be the one to actually pull the trigger. Of course, whilst Folan had charged him with tracking down Lukas and the Colombians, he hadn’t actually sought to induce him into committing murder.

Despite these musings, Miller was well aware that his targets mightn’t take too kindly to being hunted down and handed over to the suppurating superintendent. In fact, they were likely to put up fairly stiff resistance to the transaction’s completion, in which case it might be necessary for Miller to overcome his squeamishness around gun play. It’s funny, he thought, I don’t actually mind being shot at all that much, but the idea of shooting at someone else, and perhaps killing them, fills me with dread. Yet, what am I doing with this Glock in my trousers if I’m not prepared to use it; at least to preserve my own life? I think that if it comes down to it my inner Sam Spade will come to the fore and I’ll be pulling that trigger with all the fervour of an ambitious homicidal maniac.

These speculations eventually led him to the realisation that he hadn’t seen Gárda Dempsey for a while. In fact, the fellow had been rather negligent of his duties lately. For instance, where had he been when Folan was turning his knee to pulp? Time to find out.

‘Haven’t you heard?’ Dempsey said, when he eventually answered his phone.

‘Heard what?’ Miller asked.

‘About my relocation? I’ve been transferred up here to Tory Island; a beautiful place, but not where I want to be.’

‘Folan?’

‘Who else but? He called me into his office, told me to pack my bags and, to use his words, check out the scene on Tory.’

It was the age-old way the Guards had of getting rid of troublesome members of the force.
